A native perennial, the white flowering florets of yarrow can be found in late summer across meadows, verges, grassy places and hedgerows in the UK. It was used to help staunch blood flow and was purported to have been used by Achilles in the Battle of Troy to help heal the wounds of his soldiers.

A herb that grows wild in grasslands, wild and rough places, yarrow is an easy herb to look after and once established will continue to spread and flower each year. It grows in most soils and prefers a spot with plenty of sun, although it is fine with some shade during the day. It will die right down in the winter leaving behind stalks of dead flowers which can look attractive into early winter if left.

Usage

Yarrow is a herb with a long history of medicinal use around the world for its anti-hemorrhagic action meaning it can quickly stop bleeding and also to reduce pain by reducing inflammation. It is also a great herb for fevers and colds, as it encourages perspiration and helps reduce temperature and makes a good infusion when combined with other cold and flu herbs, such as elderflower. Yarrow can be cut and dried in bunches away from direct sunlight when in full flower and the leaves and flowers then powdered and stored in an airtight container for winter use.
