A bitter herb, wormwood contains large amounts of the compound thujone which can be fatal in large amounts and can cause sleeplessness and convulsions and should not be used without supervision. It is an important ingredient in absinthe and flavouring in other alcoholic drinks. It is a splendid looking in the garden with its tall spires of silver leaves.
This herb is an absolute sun worshipper and with its feet in heavy rich soils grows into a magnificent looking silver leaved herb;, planted at the back of a border alongside darker plants it looks stunning. The foliage dies back each winter and any older woody stems can be cut back in the autumn. Wormwood can be grown in containers, but does become pot bound quite quickly because of it size.
