A bitter herb, tansy was once used in special cakes made for Lent, but is better known for its insect repelling properties. It was rubbed on meat to keep flies away and used as a strewing herb to help keep fleas out of the home. The disc florets of golden flowers last a long time on the plant and can be dried for arrangements.
This classic herb grows well in both the ground and a pot in a spot with plenty of sunshine. Once established it need little care other than cutting back the old flower stalks either in autumn or winter, the new growth begins to sprout in February and if the plant is still quite young it is worth checking the slugs arent making too much of an impact on it.
