Saffron is the worlds mostly costly spice; it takes about 36,000 flowers to yield about a pound (0.454kg) of stamens. In autumn, each saffron bulb produces between one and seven purple/pink flowers with three yellow stamens drooped over the petals and these are the part harvested, dried and used.
