Rhodospatha sp. ‘Black/Red’

A rare tropical aroid with striking foliage that features deep blackish-red hues, Rhodospatha sp. ‘Black/Red’ is prized for its velvety leaves and slow, climbing growth habit. This plant is often sought after for its unique colouration and texture, making it a standout addition to indoor plant collections. It grows via elongated stems and produces small aerial roots that allow it to climb or trail, depending on how it is displayed.

Emerging leaves often exhibit lighter tones of red or burgundy, which deepen with maturity. Rhodospatha plants are typically epiphytes or hemiepiphytes in their natural habitat, thriving on tree trunks or as ground-level climbers under the forest canopy. Their care needs reflect their origins, favouring conditions that mimic humid, filtered forest light.

How to care for your Rhodospatha –

Water: Less is more when it comes to watering. Allow the top 23 cm of soil to dry out before watering again, and monitor for slightly puckered leaves as a sign that hydration is needed. Avoid waterlogging as this plant is prone to root rot.

Light: This species thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates medium levels. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and ensure adequate light to maintain its vibrant colouration. A position near an east- or west-facing window with sheer curtains works well.

Humidity: Preferring high humidity (above 70%), this plant is an excellent candidate for a terrarium setup unless it has grown too large. Alternatively, keep it near a humidifier or in a bathroom with consistent moisture levels.

Temperature: Average room temperatures of 1824C are suitable. Avoid placing it near cold draughts or heating vents that can cause rapid temperature fluctuations.

Other Info: This plant is sensitive to water quality. Use filtered or distilled water if possible to prevent mineral buildup on the leaves or in the soil.
