Known also as lions tail because of the flowering spikes, motherwort has a long history as a heart tonic and for treating a range of gynaecological problems and was also was traditionally used to treat nervous afflictions such as anxiety, depression and stress. It is a pretty herb to grow with long flowering stems full of pink flowers which attract bees and pollinating insects.
This easy to grow perennial is happy with most soil types and will tolerate some shade during the day. It can seed itself quite readily and often pops up in small cracks in paving and patios. It dies down completely in winter and emerges again in spring.
Traditionally used to as a relaxing tonic for anxiety, to calm heart palpitations and to ease menopausal related hot flushes and night sweats.
