Kale has been cultivated and eaten for many centuries and more recent times has been elevated from a simple leaf grown in labourers gardens to staple in most supermarkets.
An easy to grow hardy cut and come again leaf vegetable, kalethrives best in a rich soil that doesn’t get too dry in summer. It doesn’t mind shade, although an hour or two of sun a day is helpful. The biggest problems for this tasty leaf are pigeons and if you have lots about it is best to cover your plants with netting and cabbage white butterfly caterpillars, which lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves from May onwards and can be scraped off if you keep a look out for them.
