This species has short, thick fleshy stems about three inches long and a half inch wide. The spines are dense but soft. Flowers are showy, yellow with purplish banding. A convex ring of shiny dark purplish-brown surrounds the throat, giving the plant it’s familiar nickname, the ‘Lifesaver Plant’.
