Geum ternatum,orWaldsteinia ternata(depending on which botanist you ask), is an attractive groundcover nativeto Europe and Asia. Its scalloped, strawberry-like leaves, yellow strawberry-like flowers, and small, inedible fruit have earned it the common name “barren strawberry.” It spreads by rhizomes over time to form a thick carpet and is excellent for weed-suppression in the border or under shrubs. The foliage takes on red and bronze tones in the fall.
The small yellow blooms attract pollinators from April to June, while deer have no interest in the plant. Waldsteinia ternata barren strawberry adapts to a wide range of soil types but performs its best in average, well-draining soil. It can be grown under pine trees.
