Equisetum hyemale, also known as Horsetail Rush, is an upright, rhizomatous, flowerless plant with jointed, finely ribbed, green stems with black fringes of scale-like leaves at each joint. Equisetum hyemale prefers full sun to part shade and damp to wet soils, or even shallow water. It will also grow in heavy shade. Horsetail Rush is very invasive, so grow it only in containers to prevent rampant spread. This is a great architectural plant if well controlled.
