Digitalis purpurea Excelsior Hybrids

A fine selection, the Digitalis purpurea Excelsior Hybrids (Foxglove) offers a unique range of colours from white through to pink and purple flowers with darker pink and purple speckling in the throat. These outstanding flowers create tall spires, making them perfect for the rear of the border. The flower height reaches around 150cm and blooms from early summer to August.

This plant is easily maintained at a height of 1.5m and a spread of 50cm. Its pale green foliage adds to its beauty, while the mix of colours from purple to white bell-shaped flowers on an upright spike adds a touch of elegance to any garden. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and can be planted in full sun to full shade. With a hardiness rating of H7 (-15 and lower), it is a hardy perennial that can be left to self-seed for replacement of older plants.

Available in either a 9cm pot or 2 Litre pot, the Digitalis purpurea Excelsior Hybrids are a semi-evergreen biennial or short-lived herbaceous perennial. This plant is highly beneficial to wildlife, attracting all kinds of insects that are beneficial to the garden. Its varying heights make it perfect for creating interest in the mid-border, and when planted in clumps or drifts, the spires of flowers will provide interest throughout the summer.

Native to woodland edges, this plant prefers a moist, rich, free-draining soil and can thrive in semi-shade to full sun. The flower spikes can be left over winter to provide protection for insects and add interest to the border during the colder months. The seed pods can also be collected and sown or spread around the border to replace older plants, as they can be short-lived.
