Digitalis (commonly known as the Foxglove) is a fantastic Genus of plants to use in the garden, generally most gardeners use the purpurea forms and there are a lovely range of varieties which give true colours as well as mixed forms giving a range of colours from a single clump. Naturally growing along woodland edges these plants prefer a moist, rich, free draining soil and are happy from semi-shade through to full sun. The flowers are highly useful to wildlife and support all manner of insects which are beneficial to the garden as a whole. These plants give a range of heights and can be used to create interest through the mid border, best planted in clumps or drifts the spires of flowers will give interest throughout summer. The flower spikes can be left over winter to give protection for insects and to give interest in the border through the winter months, the seed pods can be collected and sown or spread around the border to replace older plants as they can be short lived.
