Commonly known as “plantainleaf sedge,” Carex plantagineais one of the most interesting texture plants available for shade gardens. This perennial is native to the northeastern United States, where it spreads to form large, attractive colonies in the shade. Its evergreen leaves are broad, with rippling puckers, and can be tinged with purple at the base.
Carex plantaginea plantainleaf sedge grows best in average to moist, rich soils, though it wil;l tolerate dry sites. It may tolerate morning sun, but will have to have shade by the afternoon.
Use plantainleaf sedge to form an understory in a wooded area, or as a groundcover in a shaded border. It pairs well with other shade garden staples like Heuchera (coral bells) and Phlox divaricata (woodland phlox).
