Delphinium Flower

The genus Delphinium contains more than 300 species. Other plants grow as biennials, some as perennials, and some as annuals. Some seeds germinate quickly, while others do not.

Although delphiniums are a favorite of many gardeners, it’s crucial to know that they thrive in cool, damp summers rather than hot, dry ones.

Additionally, the plants don’t enjoy rapid wind or rain. The majority of delphiniums will also need staking to keep them upright, with the exception of the dwarf perennials.

PLANTING

• Grow on soil that is rich in nutrients, has good drainage, and is protected from severe winds.

• Sow seeds in the spring. Mix 2 to 4 inches of compost into the soil as you prepare it.

• Over 300 species make up the genus Delphinium, some of which are annuals, biennials, or perennials. From seeds, some grow quickly while others don’t.

• Create a hole that is twice as wide as the plant’s container. Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil before planting.

GROWING

• Add supports as soon as the plants are 12 inches tall or by mid-spring. With twig by brushwood stakes, support the low-growing perennials. Strong stakes are required for the taller, larger-flowered delphiniums.

• Dry soil should not exist. If the weekly rainfall is less than 1 inch, water plants during the summer (March to June)

HARVESTING

• This beautiful flower works well in a cutting garden. The flowers will rebloom if you bring them indoors as soon as they open.

• Bleach, lemon juice, and sugar can be added to arrangements of delphinium. A commercial flower preserver is another option.
