A strong form with bold white variegated foliage and scented lilac flowers with orange eyes in Summer, Buddleja davidii `Florence` (also known as Butterfly Bush) is a unique and eye-catching addition to any garden. Standing at a height of 1.5m (easily kept to 2m) and with a spread of 1m, this deciduous shrub is perfect for attracting insects and butterflies.
The lance-shaped grey-green leaves with a bold white margin add interest to the garden even when the plant is not in bloom. The pink-purple panicles of small flowers add a pop of color and fragrance to the garden. This shrub thrives in well-drained, sandy, loam, chalk, or clay soil and prefers a position in full sun. It is hardy up to -15 degrees Celsius (H6 hardiness).
Available in either a 9cm pot or 2 Litre pot, Buddleja davidii `Florence` is easy to grow and maintain. However, it may suffer from a few problems, which can be easily remedied through proper pruning. It is important to avoid pruning too hard or too early, as this can lead to new shoots growing through the winter months and being easily frosted. The best time to prune is in October/November to loosely shape the shrub, and then again in late March/April for a more thorough pruning.
Buddleja is a diverse genus, with many different species and varieties offering a range of flower types, colors, and sizes. They are not just large plants, as commonly believed, and can add interest and beauty to any garden. The flowers attract butterflies and other beneficial insects, making it a joy to relax in the garden and watch the Buddleja in full bloom.
