Platycerium ‘Panama’ has an intriguing backstory that spans continents. Despite its name, ‘Panama’ is not an officially described species from Panamarather, it earned that name from where it was first noticed. In the late 1950s or around 1960, an American nurseryman, Mr. Bryant of Miami, Florida, came across an unusual staghorn fern growing on a palm tree in Panama (Central America).
Recognizing its unique qualities, he arranged to have the plant collected and sent to his nursery on 20th Street in Miami. This original fern became the foundation of the ‘Panama’ cultivar. It was nicknamed the 20th Street Platycerium after Bryants nursery address in horticultural lore. At the time, the introduction of this plant was significantit was a new form unlike the common staghorns grown in the U.S. up to that point.
Given Panamas tropical climate, the plant may have been growing wild there on that palm (perhaps from a spore of an introduced Platycerium), but it was not a known native species. It might have been a natural hybrid or simply an escaped cultivation ofP. hillii that developed a distinct look. Regardless, Mr. Bryant propagated it (likely by division) and shared it with other growers. Thus, ‘Panama’ entered cultivation in the 1960s, making it one of the earlier named staghorn fern cultivars.
