It is a vigorous, spreading herbaceous perennial to 60 cm high, with ovate green leaves and small white flowers in summer followed in autumn by large, bright orange lantern-shaped calyces, enclosing red fruits, which persist through winter

Planting : When planting in the open ground it is best planted with a mixture of your garden soil and a good quality Tree and Shrub Compost. If planting in a container then we recommend John Innes No3 Compost or a good quality Multipurpose compost with added John Innes. These plants should be fed in Spring and late Summer with a good quality granular fertiliser.
