Although found growing wild, chives didnt begin to be cultivated until the Middle Ages; many people believed that the stronger tasting herbs had a greater healing power and also improved physical strength. The wild variety can still be found and harvested, but a thick clump growing in the garden or pot, ready to cut is much easier to use.
A really easy herb to grow, chives is happy in most soils and with a mixture of shade and sun. It is a great one for containers too, from window boxes to strawberry pots and will continue to spread each year to produce a sizeable clump – perfect for the kitchen. Keep harvesting the leaves throughout the year, the flowers when they arrive will slow leaf production but can be eaten too – just cut them off if you would prefer more leaves.
