A sturdy herb with hollow stems and the flavour similar to parsley and celery with a hint of something else, it is native to the Mediterranean and was valued by the Romans and Greeks for its medicinal and culinary properties. An easy perennial to grow, lovage can be a bit of thug in the garden – it doesn’t spread so much as just grow huge getting bigger and taller each year, with this in mind give it enough space. It is happy in sun or shade and a soil that isn’t too light and can be grown successfully in containers – make sure it is fed regularly to keep in lush and green.
