This exciting new Persimmon hybrid Nikitas Gift is a cross between an American Persimmon variety (virginiana) and the Japanese Persimmon variety (kaki) and it gives us a wonderful fruit tree that is hardy to Zone 5. The bright reddish-orange fruit is about 3 wide and somewhat flattened on top. It has the same delicious flavor as the Japanese Persimmon variety and the fruit usually ripens in mid October. The fruit should be fully ripened and soft before eating, otherwise it’s astringent. Persimmon Nikita’s Gift is self-fertile, so no cross-pollinator is required. Grow in the outdoor garden in well-drained soil and give plenty of sun and water regularly for great tasting fruit. This is a grafted plant that flowers and fruits sooner. Plants may begin to produce fruit in 2-3 years.
