Dramatic black canes make this hard-to-find bamboo a sensational container or garden plant. When its grown in a large container, it limits both its overall height (that can reach 30 tall in the garden) and tendency to run (spread by underground rhizomes). Mature canes are 2 in diameter and emerge green but turn black after a year or two. We recommend removing the lower branches to make the black canes more visible. Grow in full sun.
