Cistus ladanifer – Organic Hardy Evergreen Shrub

A striking Mediterranean shrub with large white flowers marked with dark crimson spots at the base of each petal. The sticky, aromatic foliage releases a pleasant resinous fragrance on warm days. Exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and perfect for gravel gardens or coastal plantings.

Plant Features

Forms an upright, bushy shrub reaching 150-200cm tall and 120cm wide. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are dark green and sticky to the touch, covered in aromatic resin. The stems are also resinous and the whole plant has a distinctive Mediterranean appearance. Maintains good structure year-round.

Flowers

Large, papery white flowers measuring 8-10cm across with five crinkled petals, each marked with a distinctive dark crimson blotch at the base. The flowers have prominent yellow stamens and appear in clusters from May through July. Each bloom lasts only one day but new flowers open continuously throughout the season.

Growing Requirements

Requires full sun and excellent drainage. Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is extremely drought-tolerant once established. Dislikes heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. Excellent wind tolerance makes it suitable for coastal gardens. Height: 150-200cm. Spread: 120cm.

Plant Partnerships Works particularly well with:

  • Rosmarinus officinalis – aromatic herb combinations
  • Phlomis fruticosa – complementary yellow flowers
  • Santolina chamaecyparissus – silver foliage contrast

Wildlife Value

Gardening Tips

  • Plant in spring after last frost
  • Space plants 120cm apart
  • Avoid heavy pruning – light trimming after flowering only
  • Excellent for exposed coastal sites
  • Very drought-tolerant once established
  • Protect from harsh winter winds in colder areas
  • The resin can be sticky – wear gloves when handling

This impressive shrub brings Mediterranean character to gardens with its large, distinctive flowers and aromatic foliage. The drought tolerance and wind resistance make it particularly valuable for challenging growing conditions.

Selected for reliable flowering and strong growth habit. Ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance shrubs that thrive in hot, dry conditions whilst providing distinctive architectural presence.
