Bulbophyllum barbigerum, commonly called the Bearded Bulbophyllum, is a miniature, epiphytic species native to West and Central Africa. It forms small, flattened pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery leaf. This orchid is famous for its unique, highly mobile flowers. Here are some tips for growing it successfully:

  • Light: Medium, indirect light is best. Provide bright, filtered conditions. Avoid any direct, harsh sunlight, which can quickly burn the leaves.
  • Temperature: Warm to Intermediate. Ideal range is 68-82F (20-28C) during the day and a night temperature drop to 60-70F (16-21C). It is a warm-grower but can tolerate slightly cooler nights.
  • Humidity: High (70-85%) is essential due to its lack of a significant dry rest in nature. Must be combined with excellent air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
  • Watering: Requires consistently moist conditions year-round without drying out for more than three days. It grows well mounted or in shallow pots with a moisture-retentive, airy mix like sphagnum moss or fine bark. Water less in cooler, darker months but avoid letting it dry completely.

Additional Notes

Blooms on an upright spike carrying several to many small flowers. The sepals are typically a dark red-brown. The most notable feature is the fuzzy, highly mobile lip covered in dense reddish hairs, which bobs and wiggles with air movement. The flowers have an unpleasant, musky odor and are fly-pollinated.
