Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’
Ficus elastica Tineke is a stunning variegated rubber plant, prized for its broad, creamy-white and pale green leaves marbled with pink-tinged new growth. Each leaf looks hand-painted, with irregular blotches and a soft, watercolour-like effect. Compact and upright in form, Tineke adds a bright, sculptural presence to any indoor space, especially those with modern or minimal styling. Its pale tones reflect light beautifully, making it a natural choice for brightening up corners or balancing darker foliage in a room.
A cultivar of the hardy rubber tree species from Southeast Asia, Tineke is relatively low-maintenance, fast-growing in warm months, and ideal for bright living rooms, offices or entrances.
Toxic if ingested. Irritating sap.
Care Instructions
Light: Bright, indirect light is best to maintain strong variegation. Can tolerate some gentle direct morning sun.
Water: Water when the top 35cm of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering or letting the plant sit in soggy soil.
Humidity: Average home humidity is fine. Boost in very dry environments if leaf edges brown.
Temperature: Keep above 15C. Avoid cold drafts, heaters or sudden changes.
Fertiliser: Feed every 46 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.
Pruning: Prune to control height or encourage branching. Use gloves to avoid sap irritation.
Repotting: Every 12 years or when rootbound. Use free-draining, rich potting mix.
Pests: Watch for scale, mealybugs and spider mites. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to keep clean and inspect regularly.
