The Eastern sister to our native white oak (Quercus garryana) ranging from Eastern US to the Mississippi. Identifiable by its whiteish gray, textured bark and deeply lobed pinnate leaves, as well as 1 inch acorn fruits. Conical shaped when young, maturing into a graceful, rounded, wide canopy deciduous tree that can tolerate a large range of conditions (growing in USDA hardiness zones 3-9). Fall brings deep foliage colors of russet red and purple to rich brown. Excellent food for deer, squirrels, and host plant to an incredible amount of butterflies and caterpillars. It is also heavily valued for its wood, though we prefer its aesthetics in the landscape.

Mature size:slow-growing, 50-80 ft tall, ultimately
