Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’ forms clumps of large, silver green, fuzzy leaves that resemble lamb’s ears, hence the common name. Stachys ‘Big Ears’ also goes by the moniker ‘Helen von Stein’. This is a variety that rarely blooms, and when it does, the flowers are not showy, but the bees like its purple blooms. A perennial garden favorite, ‘Big Ears’ spreads to make a great filler that makes a nice background for more colorful plants. It can spread fairly quickly in rich soils, but can be planted in a large container instead. ‘Big Ears’ is generally evergreen in warm climates. Nice for edging.

Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’ prefers full sun and requires well-drained soil. It holds up well to summer’s heat and humidity. Protect from winter wet. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, drought and poor soil. Remove any leaves that become shabby.
