This species has dark green, grass-like foliage with rounded tips that emerge in the spring. By mid-summer, green-purple stems are topped with an explosion of firework-shaped balls of violet purple flowers. The flowers fade after a solid month of blooming but remain standing as attractive seed heads all winter long. The blooms are attractive to pollinators and the foliage is seldom bothered by mammals.
