Native to the harsh conditions (gravelly areas and dunes in full, dry, hot summer sun and cold winters) of the Tian Shan mountains, on the border between Kazakhstan and the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of western China, this plant is one tough hombre with only one real requirement lean, well-draining soil. This “evergray” subshrub (similar to lavender) has linear leaves, gray to white,and small, summertime yellow flowers in clusters. When you rub or crush the leaves, there is a distinct and delicious fragrance of curry powder!
