Lustrous, narrow, pinnate leaves with spiny edges take on red hues in winter, and clusters of bright yellow flowers bloom in late spring. Waxy, blue berries follow the blooms in fall. This Northwest native will thrive in full sun to deep shade but performs best in part shade with better drainage and humus-rich soil.
