Coelogyne pallida, also known by its synonym Pholidota pallida, is native to the montane forests of the eastern Himalayas, spanning Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India, and northern Myanmar. This graceful species thrives at elevations of 1,2002,200 metres, where it grows epiphytically or lithophytically in cool, moist conditions. Its softly coloured flowers and pendulous inflorescences lend it a refined elegance well-suited to shaded greenhouse or cool-growing orchid collections.

Distinctive Features

  • Pseudobulbs and Leaves: Compact, conical pseudobulbs bear two pleated, lanceolate leaves of a bright green hue.
  • Inflorescence and Flowers: The arching to pendent spikes emerge from the base, carrying numerous creamy to pale yellow flowers with a lightly spicy fragrance.
  • Growth Habit: Clumping epiphyte or lithophyte with a preference for mossy tree trunks or rocky outcrops in humid montane environments.

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers bright, filtered light; avoid harsh midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during the growing season; reduce watering slightly in winter dormancy but do not allow to fully dry out.
  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity; aim for 6080% for best growth and flower production.
  • Media: Use a fine-grade orchid mix with good moisture retentionsuch as bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite.
  • Temperature: Suited to cool to intermediate temperatures, ideally 1025C; protect from frost.
  • Fertiliser: Apply a balanced orchid fertiliser fortnightly during active growth, reducing in cooler months.
  • Repotting: Repot every 23 years in spring, or when the medium begins to break down and drain poorly.
