Bulbophyllum ornatissimum occurs from the eastern Himalayan region through Myanmar and into northern Thailand and Laos. It inhabits humid montane forests, often found growing on tree trunks or mossy branches in shaded conditions. The plant forms small pseudobulbs each carrying a single leaf. Inflorescences arise from the rhizome and bear rounded umbels of flowers, typically yellow-green with prominent red or purple spotting and striping. The clustered floral display is characteristic of the group and adapted to attract fly pollinators. This species is favoured among collectors for its colourful flowers and compact habit.
