A rare, new and spectacular insular species from theBastimentos Islands off Bocas del Toro, Panama. This is in the wet, rainforest area of northern Panama that is also rich in epiphytes. Said to be found in the proximity of beaches and salt water, it reportedly can tolerate sun but prefers open shade, Does best in sandy soils. This species forms a trunk and has very long leaves, to nearly eight feet when mature, with very large, broad, plicate leaflets. Newly emergent leaves are green. This is a new species, only described in 2008 by A.S.Taylor, J.L.Haynes & Holzman.
